Why is the BCCSA change from an exam, to a 1 day course?

  • The new Traffic Management Manual takes effect December 1, 2019 and the BCCSA needs to educate TCPs who are renewing on the new standards.
  • The 1-day TCP Renewal course will emphasize safe work practices and further safety in the (high hazard) traffic control industry.
  • A program review in 2012 recommended of implementation of a TCP Renewal course.
How will I find a course and where will course be held?
  • You can search for courses by city on the BCCSA website, and the TCP Course Schedule tab.
What will the cost be?
  • Costs will vary as set by training institutions or individual instructors.
Do I have to take a 1 day course once my card expires?
  • You have the option of taking the one-day TCP Renewal course any time during your 3-year term, or up to one year after expiry. Alternatively, you can take the two-day course with on road practical training.
Will there still be an exam?
  • Yes, there will be an exam within the course.

COVID-19

Is there an extension for TCP expiry dates due to the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • No, there is no extension to TCP expiry dates.  There are many courses available throughout the province.  See the TCP course schedules tab to find a course.

When is the next traffic control/ flagging course in my area?
Courses are held regularly all over the province. Course dates and locations and costs are all set individually by the instructor. There is a link on the BCCSA website to search for a course in your city. If you cannot find a course in your area, click on "search nearby cities" in orange.

Course Information

How much does the course cost?
Course Fees vary and are set individually by the instructor. 

How long is the course?
The two-day TCP course is 16 hours of instruction over two consecutive days. The one day TCP Renewal course is 8.5 hours of instruction.  

Can I take this course online?
No. The BCCSA is a WorkSafeBC approved training course for traffic control persons in BC.  Training is not currently available online.   

Do I need to bring anything?

On the 2nd day of the two-day course you are required to wear CSA approved steel-toed boots with min. 6 inch ankle protection, and clothing to protect you from the weather. Your instructor will provide all other required PPE.

Bagged lunch and work gloves are recommended. 

Record of completion card

I need a replacement card
Contact BCCSA and arrange payment of a replacement card ($20.00 which includes GST).  Please note you must have your valid TCP identification card on you at all times when directing traffic in BC.

My card is expired, what do I do?
Once your card has expired you are NOT eligible to direct traffic on the roads in British Columbia. If your card is expired for longer than 1 full calendar year, you are required to retake the whole 2-day course.  

How long is my record of completion valid for?
The temporary record of completion you receive upon completing the course is valid for 3 (three) months following your date of issuance. The permanent card will be received in the mail within those 3 months. Permanent cards are valid for 3 years past the initial date of issuance. 

Is my ticket from another province valid in BC?
No, tickets from other provinces are not valid in BC.

I have not received my card in the mail?
  • TCPs who complete their course are issued a temporary card that is valid for 3 months.  TCPs can expect their new card to arrive in the mail 8-10 weeks after finishing the course.  If you have not received your new card within 3 months, there is likely an issue with your mailing address.  Please call our office and confirm the information on your profile. 
Please note – TCPs looking for their card 6 months after their course has been taken will be required to pay a reprinting fee of $20.00 to issue a replacement card.


Is there a minimum age to take the TCP training?
No, there is no age limit to take the training.
